Leaders in Native Education: Stories of Connection

This fall, we’re looking back and celebrating the deep connections and critical work that unfolded this past August at the 2nd annual Leaders in Native Education Convening.

Nearly 40 educational leaders representing dozens of Tribal, state, and local agencies and organizations gathered in Dzantik’ihéeni (Juneau, Alaska) to exchange practices, build connections, and form support networks to better meet the needs of Native students across Alaska, Oregon, and Washington.

The topics discussed included language immersion and revitalization, curriculum and school structure, Title VI, and educator recruitment and retention, among others.

“Now we have a network of folks that can call on each other and ask, hey, what would you do in this case? Hey, have you seen this barrier and challenge? What did you do?” said Will Makoyiisaaminaa (Nelson) (Blackfeet Nation), superintendent of La Conner School District.
