Science of Reading: The Big 5

A one-page guide to key concepts in the Science of Reading

The Need

It’s hard to condense 50 years of research into a single resource.

The Science of Reading is an ongoing field of study that examines the last 50 years of research to determine the most effective way to teach reading. Reading instruction is largely divided into two approaches: structured literacy and whole language. Structured literacy applies knowledge from the Science of Reading to teach reading explicitly and systematically to young learners.

The Resource

The Big 5 gives educators an overview of the five central concepts of a Science of Reading–based approach to literacy instruction: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
